A NEWSLETTER FOR AUTO TRANSPORTATION

Trucking is considered a fundamental pillar in the commercial and logistics sector, since it is mostly the complement to other means of transportation that allows goods to reach their final destination thanks to its reach in urban and even rural areas.

Factors that affect the industry, both directly and indirectly, lead us to analyze how each of them will influence the performance and operation of trucking this 2025 in Mexico. Below you will find some of the most significant factors for this year within the industry.

Trade relations between Mexico and the United States

Trade tensions in light of the change of presidency in the United States have kept the population awake at night, due to the intention of the current President of the United States, Donald Trump, to impose tariffs on 25% of Mexican imports.

Data published by INEGI, and released by ANPACT, allow us to know that Mexico is the sixth largest exporter of buses worldwide. The increase in tariffs causes an increase in final costs for U.S. users, which directly affects bus sales and therefore does not make the figures for this industry so encouraging.

On the other hand, the import of used heavy vehicles has increased significantly, which has a direct impact on road safety, the environment and the economy, as they tend to have major failures that often cause road accidents and/or loss of transported goods.

Approval of beaconing in auto transportation

In order to improve safety in road transportation and due to the insecurity events that have occurred in recent years, mainly in the theft of goods and vehicles, beaconing has been approved for federal trucking.

The DGAF published in the DOF that as of February 8, 2025, motor carriers will have 90 days to be beaconed.

The marking consists of identifying vehicles by means of a series of alphanumeric characters that are visible both during the day and at night.

This provision will mainly affect small and medium-sized companies in the trucking sector, since it will represent a significant expense for their companies to mark their trucking units that provide cargo, passenger and tourism services.

Mexico prepares for the 2026 World Cup

Uber, one of the most recognized transportation companies in the sector, prepares for the World Cup in Mexico in 2026.

It launches Uber XXL, vehicles like minivans ideal for small groups of people (max. 6 people). It was specifically designed to receive national and international tourists coming to the World Cup.

This service is already available at the AICM and Cancun Airport, and seeks to play an important role in the country's mobility.

Sustainable solutions continue to rise

Without leaving aside environmental care, sustainability and the goal of net zero, sustainability is having an impact on the trucking sector.

New regulations, such as the one that states that only vehicles with Euro 6 or EPA 10 technologies that seek to be more environmentally friendly can be marketed in Mexico, will change the supply and demand in the country.

At the same time, technological trends such as AI, which allows route optimization, hybrid vehicles, the search for sustainable fuels and last mile delivery by means of drones and robots will have a significant impact on the trucking industry, reflected in time and cost savings, without taking into account the initial investment.

The infrastructure and the support of public and private institutions will determine the pace of the challenges that the industry will face, however, it is important to highlight that despite the difficulties that the sector may present, these improvements open the door to a more efficient and safe future for the transportation of goods in the country.
